Yahoo News: Del Mar racing fans will get their usual double dose of stakes action as the seaside track opens its 66th season Wednesday with two divisions of the Oceanside Stakes, the perennial opening-day feature for 3-year-olds going a mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

The race, a prep for the Del Mar Derby late in the meet, has been run in divisions 21 times since 1980.

The first division, with a field of nine entered, will be run as the sixth race on the day's nine-race card, and the second, featuring 10 horses, will be the eighth race. Each carries a purse of $75,000.

Headlining the first division are Avanti Avanti and Steal Your Thunder, both of whom come into the race off victories at Hollywood Park. Avanti Avanti will be making his third start in the United States for owner Red Oak Stable of John Brunetti and trainer Ron McAnally, while Steal Your Thunder seeks his third career win for owner Warren Williamson and trainer Carla Gaines. David Flores will ride the McAnally entrant and Victor Espinoza gets the call on Gaines' charger.

Adding an international flavor to the race will be the presence of Italian-bred Becrux, owned by Team Valor Stables, Gary Barber and Emilio Balzarini. Becrux, who has a record of five wins in nine lifetime starts, will be making his second start in North America and gets the saddle services of Hollywood Park riding champion Garrett Gomez.

Here's the way the field will line up from the rail, with weights and riders: Eastern Sand, 117, Alex Solis; Legal Precedent, 121, Corey Nakatani; Talking to John, 119, Tyler Baze; Lucky Bid, 117, Rene Douglas; Leo Getz, 117, Patrick Valenzuela; Becrux, 121, Gomez; Avanti Avanti, 121, Flores; Stedfast McStaunch, 121, Danny Sorenson; Steal Your Thunder, 121, Espinoza.

Included in those expected to go to the gate is the undefeated El Roblar, who steps into stakes company for the first time for Stonestreet Stables and trainer Richard Mandella. Alex Solis will ride the son of War Chant, who is making his first start on the turf.

Another standout in the field figures to be Juliesugardaddy, winner of three straight races in which he vanquished such outstanding runners as Osidy, Dover Dere, Khyber Pass and Talking to John. His regular rider, Alex Bisono, will be in the irons.

The other winners coming into the race are Khyber Pass, Dante's Inferno, County, Standing Brave and In Excelsis.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, where the surf meets the turf, is featuring its richest stakes schedule since opening 66 years ago. Purses exceed $6.7 million, ranging from $100,000 to $1 million for 29 stakes.

Delmar's 2005 Horse racing meet begins July 20 and offers an additional $450,000 and a pair of new stakes that promises to help the track surpass last year's record season.

Del Mar Racing Secretary Tom Robbins gave a special pizzazz to the upcoming seaside season. The premier $1 million Pacific Classic on Sunday, Aug. 2, is one of several twin stakes Saturdays or Sundays that will attract outstanding handicap horses throughout the land.

Past winners of the Grade 1 event include Candy Ride two years who broke the track record covering 1¼ miles in 1:59, plus pretty fair thoroughbreds such as Came Home in '02, General Challenge, '99; Free House, '98; Gentlemen, '97; and Best Pal, '91, during the inaugural running.

Other big weekends with double stakes days during the 43-day meeting are:

Saturday, July 21, features the $400,000 John C. Mabee Handicap for fillies and mares 3-year-olds, 1 1/8 miles on the resodded Jimmy Durante turf course, named for one of the Hollywood entertainers who supported the track over the decades.

GN-1 Bermuda replaced a combination of Coast Bermuda, Hybrid Bermuda and Kikuyu. Each type of grass had different growing patterns and watering needs, making it difficult to grow a uniform seven-furlong turf course.

Saturday, July 22, includes the $400,000 Eddie Read Handicap for 3-year-olds and up 1 1/8 miles on the turf, one of six Grade 1 stakes.

Sunday, Aug. 21, includes 20th running of the $300,000 Pat O'Brien Stakes for 3-year-olds and up, seven furlongs, one of 11 Grade 2 stakes that was boosted by $50,000. The race is named for the actor who served a vice president of the Del Mar Turf Club when it was formed in the late '30s.

He and club president Bing Crosby, a racing enthusiast who led the founding group of film stars, put up personal loans against their life insurance when initial funding met with d setbacks.

On Aug. 12, 1938, Seabiscuit nosed out Ligaroti, considered one of the best horses on the West Coast, in a match race before 20,000 fans before heading east to soundly defeat War Admiral.

During 1942-44, Del Mar first served as a World War II training area for Marines, then grandstand became a bomber tail assembly production line for B-17 bomber parts.

When the war ended in '45, President Truman declared a national holiday on Aug. 15 and 20,324 fans turned out as racing resumed.

In '46, Indian Watch and War Allies dead-heated in the first running of the Bing Crosby Handicap. The $300,000 race, increased by $100,000, for 3-years-olds and up with be run at six furlongs on Sunday, July 31.

The first stakes race is opening day Wednesday – the Oceanside Stakes for $3-year-olds at a mile on the turf, one of seven $100,000 races.

Corey Nakatani will defend his '04 riding title. He was aboard 54 winners, two more than Tyler Baze. Doug O'Neil was last year's top trainer with 28 victories, four more than Jeff Mullins.

Closing day is Wednesday, Sept. 7, which features the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds at seven furlongs.

Del Mar, by the way, means "by the sea" in Spanish.

Hollywood Mixed with Racing History at Del Mar Racetrack

What do Bing Crosby and Seabiscuit have in common? They were part of Del Mar Racetrack's rich history.

It was in 1937 when the legendary crooner, Bing Crosby, along with friends Jimmy Durante and Pat O'Brien set out to follow a horse racing dream. They built a nice little race track where they could go crazy horse betting all day and get crazier partying and hobknobbing all night, right in the middle of sunny California.

Thus, in the seaside city of Del Mar, just north of San Diego, the Del Mar Racetrack was opened for the first time to inspire awe from the horsemen and horse racing fans of America.

Hollywood took notice and stars like Ava Gardner, Dorothy Lamour, and Lucille Ball came to the then-fast-rising Del Mar fairgrounds for photo ops. Horse racing greats no less than William Lee "Bill" Shoemaker, Johnny Longden, Laffit Pincay, Jr., and more followed suit to grace the turf. In 1938, legendary horse Seabiscuit helped immortalize the Del Mar Racetrack when it won in an epic race against Ligaroti.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club "where the turf meets the surf", will embrace the headlines once again for its 65th racing season to take place on July 20-September 8. With 29 major racing events worth a record $6,775,000 plus an additional $450,000 in stakes purses.
