Pure As Gold, Longshot, Triumphs at Bing Crosby Handicap

delmar-race-trackLongshot Pure as Gold won the $300,000 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar on Sunday.

The 4-year-old gelded son of Stolen Gold and Pure Wood, ridden by Jon Court, held off 4-5 favorite Bordonaro in a prolonged stretch duel, winning by a half-length in 1:08.79 over six furlongs.

Pure as Gold paid $48.20, $9.60 and $3.80, while Bordonaro paid $3 and $2.40. Battle Won finished third and paid $2.60.

Jockey Alex Solis, who rode Bordonaro, said Court struck his horse across the head with a whip in the final stretch and claimed foul. The board of stewards ruled there was no conclusive evidence that the incident occurred and allowed the original order of finish to stand.

Earning $180,000, Pure as Gold boosted his lifetime earnings to $401,444. It was the seventh win in 17 starts for the chestnut colt.

DelMar's 2006 Race Meet Opens

delmar-race-meet-openingPleasure and pageantry once again are set to reign at Del Mar racetrack as the popular seaside oval is ready to open the gates for its 67th summer season of Thoroughbred racing – “where the turf meets the surf down at old Del Mar.”

This year’s 43-day meet operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club begins Wednesday, July 19 and runs through Wednesday, September 9. The track will race six days a week, Tuesday being the dark day.

Post time for the first race each day will be 2 p.m. for the most part, except for the track’s special twilight racing on its Four O’Clock Friday schedule, and a 1 p.m. start Pacific Classic Day, Sunday, August 20.

The track’s signature event will be the Pacific Classic, the $1-million, Grade I test for 3-year-olds and up going the classic American distance of 10 furlongs.

This year’s edition of the “Classic” offers added significance because for the first time since its inception in 1991, one horse – in this case, Lava Man – has a chance to win Southern California’s richest and most prestigious trifecta of the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup and the Pacific Classic in the same year. Del Mar’s top event will be toasted on a one-hour television show coast-to-coast by ESPN.

Del Mar's 66th Racing Season - California's Coolest Races

The 66th racing season of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club horse races parades to the post beginning July 19, Wednesday, through September 6, 2006 Wednesday. Get daily free DelMar racing picks and betting tips from expert handicappers, DelMar odds, DelMar news, race entries and race results.

"Where the surf meets the turf", the track opened in 1937 when Bing Crosby, along with friends Jimmy Durante and Pat O'Brien set out to follow a horse racing dream. They built a nice little race track where they could go crazy horse betting all day and get crazier partying and hobknobbing all night, right in the middle of sunny California.

In 1938, legendary horse Seabiscuit helped immortalize the Del Mar Racetrack when it won in an epic race against Ligaroti.

Del Mar 2006 race meet opens with Oceanside Stakes on July 19 and will close with the $250,000 DelMar Futurity (Gr. II) on Labor Day.

Del Mar is to California what Saratoga is to New York. From a quaint race track started by Hollywood legend Bing Crosby and his high-profile gang in 1937, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club today is among America’s best attended race tracks.
